2009 PBBA Finals

2009 NBR Finals

Raleigh, NC February 12-13, 2010

By Kaitlyn Driscoll

It pretty much goes without saying that the finals of any bull riding association is the most highly anticipated event of the season. The National Bull Riding Association (NBR) Championship Bull Riding and Barrel Racing was held February 12th and 13th in Raleigh, NC, and was no exception. All year long, the cowboys and cowgirls competed for their spot at the finals. This Carousel Farms production, held at the JB Hunt Arena at the NC State fairgrounds, proved to be an electric two-night performance, despite the snow and wintry weather.

The top 30 bull riders in the NBR were paired up against the paramount bucking bulls in the Professional Bucking Bull Association (PBBA). It turned out to be quite a showdown, a showdown of the best battling the best for the top prizes of cash and buckles. The top 15 cowgirl barrel racers also attended the event, racing against the clock, and each other, for prestigious awards. This 2009 season finale proved rewarding for many of the cowboys and cowgirls, and more than $15,000 in cash and prizes was awarded to the winning contestants.

Friday night, Cody Martin of Georgia sat atop the leader board with a score of 86.75 on Rafter C Bucking Bull’s Texas and won himself $930 in prize money. Kevin McKeeman placed second with an 85.5 aboard Black Belt from Diamond C and earned $697.50. Blaine Whipp placed third with 82.5 on another Diamond C bull Bomb.com and earned a $464 paycheck. Jay Miller rounded out fourth place with a 78 point ride on Wolverine from Walton & Wagoner, and he received a $232.50 paycheck for his efforts. .

In the cowgirl barrel racing, Terra Garrison led the pack with a 16.1 second run Friday night and earned herself a $509.50 paycheck. Lari Lee Isley was close behind with a 16.157 second time and took home $305.70. Brynn Blackwell set the third place pace at 16.24 seconds and received $203.80 for her effort.

Saturday night, Josh Faircloth won the round with an electric 89.5 point ride ($930) on a bull named Rubber Bucky from Charlie Oldham and Caleb & Tonya White. Blaine Whipp made his second qualified ride aboard Texas from Rafter C Bucking Bulls to the tune of 86.25 points ($697.50). Jay Miller also put together his second qualified ride with 85.75 points ($465) aboard Callaway Baxter’s bull Animal House.  Cody Martin, the third man to put together two qualified rides, rounded out fourth place with an 84.50 point ($232.50) ride on Shot Gun Ready from SR Rodeo.

The second night of barrel racing showed some familiar names from Friday night’s performance. Brynn Blackwell finished first with a 15.79 second run ($509.50). Lari Lee Isley trailed right behind with a 15.86 second run ($305.70). Jill Riebe rounded out third place with a time of 16.133 seconds ($203.80).

Only two bull riders had qualified rides in the short go round. Josh Faircloth was 89.75 points aboard Johnny Ringo from Rafter C Bucking Bulls, and Jay Miller, the only man to ride three bulls all weekend, was 83 points on Clay Ellison’s Black Magic.

Jay Miller of Liberty, SC won the average for the finals, with a combined score of 242.75 points, received $2475 in prize money, a Bob Berg Buckle, and a total of $3172.50 won for the weekend. North Carolina native Josh Faircloth finished second overall in the average with a total score of 176.75 points, received $1375 for the average, and a total of $2305 in prize money. Cody Martin polished the weekend off in third place with a combined score of 171.25 points. He earned himself $825 in the average and $1987 for the weekend. Blaine Whipp finished close behind with 168.75 points, $550 in average prize money and $1712.50 total. Rounding out fifth place was Kevin McKeeman with 158.75 points total, $275 in the average, and $972.50 for the weekend.

The PBBA Tier I first place bull was Short Notice owned by Jason Roberts, and the second place bull was Homer, owned by Mike Porter. The PBBA Tier II winning bull was High Dollar owned by Craig Wagoner. Tied for second, third, and fourth were Black Belt from Diamond C, Shot Gun Ready owned by SR Rodeo, and Rubber Bucky owned by Charlie Oldham and Caleb and Tonya White. The “money bull” of the weekend was Texas of Rafter C Bucking Bulls; Texas not only took a few guys to the pay window throughout the weekend, but he showed his potential as a great animal athlete.

The finals also awarded many of the people who help to make events possible throughout the year, each of whom received a custom Bob Berg buckle for their hard work and dedication. Announcer of the Year was Jeff Wolfe, Secretary of the Year was Jean Radford, Scotty Williams and Kelsey Salisbury were both awarded buckles for their judging, Barrel man of the Year was Jake Wilcox, Bullfighter of the Year was Chad Ellison, Event of the Year was Camden, SC a Rafter C and Tom Smith production, and finally, Producer of the Year was Jason Roberts.

2010 shows promise to be even more successful than 2009 for the NBR. Our next event will be held March 19th and 20th in Pelzer, SC. It will be an NBR/CBR/PBBA co-sanctioned event with $5,000 added in prize money. Friday night’s performance will be a CBR event, and Saturday will be an NBR. Both nights will be PBBA performances, and there will be a short round each night! 2010 PBBA Finals

By Kaitlyn Lee Driscoll

Clemson, SC, January 22nd & 23rd, 2010 – Recently, the top bulls from the 2009 Professional Bucking Bull Association (PBBA) season met in Clemson, SC for the 2009 PBBA finals. Stock contractors spanning from Ohio to Florida hauled their bulls to compete against one another for numerous prestigious titles. These first-rate PBBA bulls were matched up against the top 20 bull riders from the NBR Series along with the number one and number two cowboy from the NBRA, SSBR, Rafter K series, Carousel Farms series, and the IBR.

After two nights of intense competition, the PBBA Finals Champion #D54 High Noon (of Elrod & Elrod) scored a total of 177.50 points and earned his owners Donna and Dell Elrod a Bob Berg PBBA finals champion buckle and a hefty check. Rob and Kayla Melton’s bull #44 Mr. Woodcock was the reserve champion bull of the finals. Both the Elrod’s and the Melton’s won feed supplement and distress, compliments of Two Bulls in Duncan, Oklahoma. Rafter C Bulls’ #20 Johnny Ringo placed 3rd while Bobby Bowman’s #380 Jocko and Melton/Smith/Watson’s bull #46 Loaded finished 4th and 5th,  respectively.

The PBBA winner of the High Point Bull of the year award and a Bob Berg buckle was Jason Roberts’ #412 Short Notice. Finishing close behind was #D54 High Noon of Elrod & Elrod. Rounding out the top five was #669 Brown Mule from Clay Ellison & Will John Simpson, Justin Cornwell’s #207 Hang Em High, and Lore Kerr’s #515 Iron Broke.

The bulls weren’t the only ones receiving winnings that weekend. Kevin "Rooster" McKeeman was named the 2009 NBR Series Champion Bull Rider. Kevin represented the SSBR at the PBBA Finals in Clemson, and he was awarded the Hennessy Custom Saddle, Bob Berg Buckle, and a check for his impressive rides. Jay Miller of Liberty, SC won the NBR Series Finals along with a Bob Berg buckle and check. Tracy Phillips was named the winner of the NBR Series barrel racing average after a first place finish Friday night and a second place run on Saturday. She also received a Bob Berg champion buckle. The winner of a new set of Cooper Tires sponsored by Cooper tires was Kelly Clem, from Oakwood, IL. He burned up more rubber than anyone running up & down the road to PBBA events! Finally, Jason Roberts of Jason Roberts Rodeo Company was presented with a custom PBBA stock trailer sponsored by Bill Black Featherlite, in commemoration of his recognition as the 2009 PBBA Producer of the Year, a title he defended from 2008.

The PBBA had a very successful finals and a successful season overall. Without excellent producers and incredibly generous sponsors, the PBBA would not have been able to put on so many top-notch events. The PBBA Finals was produced by Ernie Treadway and Brian Hope, and it was sponsored by HnH News, Cooper Tires, WW Equipment, Wrangler, Two Bulls, Twisted X Boots, & Bob Berg Design. We extend a gracious thanks to our producers and sponsors who were there all year long and helped round out a great season!

The PBBA sanctions open competitions for bulls of any age and pedigree.  Results from previous seasons as well as the schedule of events for 2010 will be posted on the PBBA web site at www.pbbanow.com, in HnH news, and broadcasted in a number of other publications. PBBA Announces Lifetime Achievement Award

PBBA Announces Lifetime Achievement Award

By Kaitlyn Lee Driscoll

The Professional Bucking Bull Association announced the formation of the PBBA Hall of Fame’s “Lifetime Achievement Award”. The award was developed and sponsored by PBBA board members Bob and Pat Cooper of Rafter C Bucking Bulls. Inductees were presented the award at the 2009 PBBA Finals Stock Contractors Awards Breakfast at the Ramada Inn in Clemson, South Carolina. Additional inductees will be added each year based on an individual’s achievements and contributions to the sport of bull riding. PBBA Vice President Tom Smith added that the association is working on a permanent location for the Hall of Fame memorabilia to be housed. “Perpetual awards showing the history of the PBBA and NBRA will be developed and added to each year. People who have had a positive impact on the sport of bull riding and the rodeo industry will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Their contributions will be preserved for future generations to see. The PBBA is only four years old, however our membership has a long history in the rodeo industry. The hall of fame will showcase the accomplishments of cowboys, livestock and rodeo professionals in our region, East of the Mississippi.”

The 2009 Inductees are as follows.

Scott Williams

Scott “Poncho” Williams was raised in the mountains near Salem, South Carolina. He began his rodeo career in 1975 riding bulls and broncs. He was the 1978 & 1979 SCHSRA Bareback Champion and a reserve champion bull rider. As a bull rider in the 70s through the 90s he qualified for multiple SRA and ACA finals. Scott won the PRCA Arcadia, Florida Rodeo and qualified for the IPRA Southeastern Circuit Finals five times. Poncho hung up his spurs in 1999 and picked up a judging clipboard. Scott is known and respected for his integrity as a judge in the bull riding arena and has helped many contestants become champions offering advice as an instructor . Scott promotes the sport by adhering to the rules and calling it as he sees it.

Ernie Treadway

Ernie’s rodeo career began in the 1950’s riding goats in his father’s rodeo productions. He rode bulls in the 1960’s and 1970’s and produced his first event at the age of eighteen in 1972. The Ernie Treadway Rodeo Company has raised world champion livestock and produced successful events across the Eastern United States for over three decades. Many champions, both cowboys and livestock got their start with Ernie’s assistance. He has played a major role in promoting the sport by developing new contestants, contractors and producers. Ernie is one of the original founders of the PBBA.

Devin Long

Devin “Diesel” Long from Summerville, North Carolina career in bull riding began in 1994. In 2001 Devin qualified for the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Challenger Series Finals. He qualified for the SEBRA finals 14 times finishing in the top three and the top five 3 times. Devin gritted his teeth and reached through the pain for a come back that included many event championships including the 2007 Carousel Farms title.  A true role model, Devin can often be found lifting the spirits of a down cowboy, giving sought after advice to a rookie or offering prayer before an event. Devin moves into the next phase of his rodeo career after hanging up his spurs in 2010.

PBBA adds second level of competition

The PBBA Board met on February 28th and ironed out the details of the PBBA two Tier system. The details are below.

Tier 1

Tier 1 bulls are for any bull that has been to a PBBA Finals or has qualified to go to the PBBA Finals. Contractors can also choose to enter their bull in Tier 1. Once a bull has competed in Tier 1 he cannot move down to Tier 2. The entry fees for Tier 1 are $500. The payout will depend on the number of bulls entered in Tier 1. (see below) Tier 1 bulls can also be used in the short go. A random draw will be made each night to determine which Tier 1 bulls will go to the short go. The bulls for the PBBA/NBR Series Finals will be the top 40 bulls from Tier 1.

Tier 2

Tier 2 bulls are any bulls that are not required to be in Tier 1 and the contractor elected to enter their bull in Tier 2. The entry fees for Tier 2 are $300, the PBBA Fee & the Finals Fee for Tier 2 bulls are 1/2 of that of the Tier 1 bulls. The payout will depend on the number of entries. (see below) Tier 2 bulls cannot be in the short go. Once a bull has won $1,000 or more in Tier 2 PBBA competitions he must move up to Tier 1. The money won & points earned in Tier 2 do carryover to Tier 1 and count towards the bull's PBBA standings in Tier 1.

The event format:

The Tier 1 & Tier 2 bulls will be at the same event and in the same bull rider draw, except for the short go. Tier 1 bulls will compete against Tier 1 bulls and Tier 2 against Tier 2. Both Tiers will be judged by the same judges and the judges will not know the difference.

Example event:

The Producer is taking 30 bull riders and taking 8 back to the short go. There are 20 Tier 2 entries and 18 Tier 1 entries. The 20 Tier 2 bulls will be in the long round. The 18 Tier 1 bulls will draw for the 8 short round spots and the other 10 will be in the long round. Tier 1 will pay 5 holes as will Tier 2.

Payout

The payout for both levels will depend on the number of entries. Such as; 6 entries pays 2 holes, another hole will be paid for every three additional entries, up to 15 -29 entries which will pay 5 holes. 30 or more will pay 7 holes. Therefore, 9 entries pays 3 holes, 12 pays 4 and 15 pays 5.
