Bull riding and rodeo events bring a new crowd with each and every performance. There are always new faces waiting in anticipation to witness the excitement and competition of each event. Of course there are the fans that attend as many events as their lives will allow, but they all started out s first-time spectators somewhere in their past. For many fans, their involvement in rodeo or bull riding may only go as far as watching the events when they come to town. For others, their involvement may grow to participation in the events as a competitor, contractor, investor, sponsor, concessions, retail, or performer. It may be the “come one come all” feeling or the rustic western atmosphere that invites you in, but regardless, it’s the sense of family and community that keeps the sport of rodeo growing year after year.
It is sometimes curiosity or chance encounters that lead people to rodeo events, but more often than not, it is the friendships outside of the rodeo life that bring in newcomers. Word of mouth is one of the most influential forms of advertisement when it comes to any business, whether it’s a doctor’s office or a restaurant. The same holds true for rodeo. People involved in the rodeo world are continuously bringing in the new faces from their lives outside of rodeo, whether they intend to or not. These people then bring their friends and family, who tell other friends and family members, and the dominoes keep on falling. And so the rodeo family grows.
Recently, the NBR and PBBA have welcomed a very unique and humbling family to its own rodeo family. The Brown family, comprised of father Mark, mother Angie, daughter Meagan, daughter Erin (Brown) Bailey, and Stuart Bailey, were virtually unaware of rodeo and its many events until 2008. Their involvement began, as most do, with a deep friendship between Angie Brown and Kathy Klein-Porter, wife of stock contractor, producer, and PBBA President Mike Porter. In 2003 the Brown family moved from Mississippi to Taylors, SC where husband Mark Brown worked with the music staff at Taylor’s First Baptist Church. Angie began a women’s bible study class, and one of her members was Kathy. Their friendship grew and the two maintained a relationship in and out of church. Mark and Mike met shortly thereafter during Kathy’s short stint in the hospital for surgery on a broken ankle, and they in turn began their own friendship. It was around this time that, as Angie told me, “God was stirring our hearts to leave the church to start a family ministry where we could reach out to people outside of the church and share the same love with them that Christ gave to us.” In June 2009, Mark resigned from his position, they sold their farm, and they began traveling and doing local outreach events (such as singles and youth events). They called the endeavor the Brown Family Ministries, and they operated on the simple principle of sharing God’s everlasting love.
Kathy and Mike invited the Brown family to attend one of their events, the 2008 PBBA Finals in Clemson, SC and as Angie admitted, she was quite nervous in the days preceding the event. “I had never been around cowboys or livestock. I didn’t even own a pair of cowboy boots! I knew that the people there would be good people, but I just worried about fitting in or being out of place.” So, true to a woman’s fashion, Angie went out, bought herself a pair of bona fide cowboy boots and they headed to the Garrison arena.
That night the Brown family were introduced to the exciting world of bull riding, and they’ve been a part of it ever since. It’s no surprise that they became instant fans, after all, it’s one of the most unique sports in existence; it’s a historical sport stemming from the lifestyle of cowboys of the wild west filled with all the modern touches: performers, fancy arenas and equipment, valuable livestock bred for competitive edge, and grand prizes that allow the contestants and contractors to make a living doing what they love. The people involved in rodeo events are just as inviting as well. While other sports such as professional football and basketball invite all levels of fans from infrequent to diehard, rodeo invites all fans to become a part of their family, a much deeper commitment to their inclusion in the events. Personally, I have never attended an event where I didn’t feel welcomed and respected by those around me. As Angie put it, “We instantly felt at ease. The people were so warm and inviting, willing to answer all of our silly questions or reassure us throughout the show. Since then, we have grown to love all of our new friends and we find ourselves praying for their continued safety and protection.”
So it began and so it continues. The Brown family attended PBBA/NBR events regularly and grew to love not only the people, but the sport itself. Wife and mother Angie soon felt the urge to become a more involved fixture in the NBR/PBBA community. Angie asked Kathy if it would be possible for the Brown Family Band to play at an event. The family band consists of Mark on the guitar and vocals, Angie on the soundboard, Erin on the keyboard and vocals, Meagan on the drums and vocals, and Erin’s husband Stuart who assists with the lighting and soundboard as well. (In February of 2011 Erin and Meagan released their first CD under their stage moniker Erin Elizabeth.) Kathy checked with Jeff and Linda Mullins, producers of the 2009 NBR Finals in Raleigh, NC and they readily agreed to allow the Brown Family Band to provide the pre-event entertainment. They played music for the crowd and contestants Friday night and then held a Cowboy Church service Saturday morning. It was an instant success. They quickly decided that at the next event they performed, they wanted to do something more involved with contestants. So, they devised a plan to have a cookout and guitar picking session prior to the Saturday night performance followed by pre-show concert. The family grilled hamburgers and hotdogs and invited everyone to sit around, talk, pick guitars, sing, and just have fun. They even went to the extent of making flyers with cookie-filled goodie bags to invite everyone to attend.
While at the Camden, SC NBR/PBBA they held a pre-bull riding cookout and guitar session. After the bull riding, they held a concert where they played hits songs from Lady Antebellum, Johnny Cash, Dwight Yoakam, Credence Clearwater Revival, The Beatles, Miranda Lambert, Johnny Rivers, Tom Petty, and Little Big Town. Mark jokingly added that he’s even “been known to sing Honky Tonk Woman” on occasion. While their lives show passion for spreading the word of God, their concerts center more on creating a fun and inviting atmosphere by playing music that the whole crowd can enjoy. Because of this fun and the welcoming feeling the family brings to the event, the concert was a success and the involvement of spectators and contestants was great.
A familiar face that often lends his talents on the harmonica to the performance is our very own Mike Porter! Many people know Mike as a stock contractor and producer but were unaware of his musical talents. The energy brought forth by the Brown Family Band enticed his harmonicas out of the grocery bag he kept them in. Mike has performed with the family on numerous occasions and he’s even traded in the grocery bag for a harmonica case!
While their involvement may seem trivial, the depth of such small gestures must never be overlooked. The family has a message and their message is simple: “God loves all of us, and we love all of you”. Their strong understanding of God’s love for them allows them to reach out to people and treat them like family, allowing them to feel that very same love.
The Brown family has, in 2011, attended the PBBA Finals in Clemson, SC as well as the NBR Finals in Raleigh, NC. In Raleigh, they had a chili cookout and a spectacular post-show performance. The family plans to attend as many NBR and PBBA events as possible in the coming years and they hope to only further their involvement in the events through concerts, cookouts and cowboy church services. Their strong sense of God’s love (and their open arms to all) has allowed them to integrate themselves as a fixture in the bull riding/rodeo family. Their faith and giving hearts epitomize the fundamentals of this sport. Love your God, love your family and love your country. Ride hard, never give up, have faith, and be true to thy own self. You can attend sporting events all over this world, but only in this sport can you find a sense of these simple, yet meaningful, ideals. The Brown Family Ministry and Brown Family Band have brought something truly unique and valuable to this sport, and their continued involvement will be something we all can truly enjoy and appreciate.

Written by Beau Schell

On February 11-12, 2011, the top stock contractors of the Professional Buck Bull Association (PBBA) gathered at the JB Hunt Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina for the 2010 Open Bull finals. With over 30 of the East Coast’s best bucking bulls, JB Hunt Arena’s back pens were packed with a rank pen of bulls that the cowboys of the NBR were anxious to ride. Coming into the finals the top 5 bulls were nearly neck and neck, with High Noon of Elrod Bucking Bulls leading the way. Following were Black Belt of Dale Cox Bucking Bulls, Loaded of Melton/Watson/Smith, and Blue Alien also of Dale Cox Bucking Bulls in fifth.
After the Brown Family Band, featuring the new hit duo Erin Elizabeth, rocked the arena the lights dimmed and the show began! With a tough crew of NBR cowboys and a rank pen of bulls the final event would prove to be an exciting one for contestants and fans alike. Throughout the finals, which were televised live via a webcast by www.makin8.com and www.buckersnow.com, the packed crowd witnessed some of the finest bulls performing at their peak. Although only one could claim Bucking Bull of the Finals. That Bull was Loaded Gun owned by Rob Melton of Rocking R Bull Group, with a combined nightly score of 175.25. In second place was Ernie Treadway’s Whammer with a score of 174.00. With the judges’ scores tight, third and fourth place was a close call. High Noon of Elrod Bucking Bulls, also the high point bull of the year, took third with 173.75. Following High Noon was Rocking R Bull Group’s Neon Ghost bringing in a score of 173.50. In fifth place was Yellow Dog of WW Bucking Bulls of with a combined score of 173.25.
During the 2010 season many stock contractors had proved the quality of their livestock. One such contractor is Dale Cox, who was the 2010 PBBA Stock Contractor of the Year, Cox brought numerous outstanding bulls to many PBBA events. He was rewarded with bragging rights, an amazing Bob Berg buckle and a decked out Bill Black Featherlite trailer. Also at the finals once again was 13 Homer, a Thunder Run Ranch Bull owned by Mike Porter, who is the only bull to qualify for all four consecutive PBBA finals. Also having a successful year was Rob Melton of the Rocking R Bull Group who took home the buckle for Stock Contractor of the Finals.
Taking place at the same time was the 2010 National Bull Riders (NBR) Finals. With many experienced riders matched up against a tough pen of bulls, it turned out to be an exciting two nights. The NBR Finals ended with Brandon Chambers winning the 2010 NBR Champion Bull Rider Berg buckle and custom made Hennessey saddle. John Garrett took home the Stock Contractor of the Year buckle. Another contractor that had a good weekend was Bobby Bowman. Bobby’s bull Jocko landed him the 2010 NBR Bull of the Year buckle. After a busy and eventful season for the NBR bull riders the finals and their 2010 season ended the year with a bang.
The PBBA was excited to have another successful year and thank everyone who helped make it so great. The 2010 season could not have happened without all of the contractors, participants, judges, bull fighters, spectators, back pen workers, specialty acts, announcers, sponsors, producers, and secretaries.
To all of our sponsors: WW Livestock Systems, Cooper Tires, Humps N’ Horns, Twisted X Boots, Bob Berg Designs, Bill Black Featherlite Trailers, Wrangler, Two Bulls Supplements, Rodeo Attitude, The Short Round, Buckin Stock magazine, and Lazy J Equipment we greatly appreciate your support and look forward to our continuing relationship. The PBBA also thanks Bob “Camo” Walker and Ricky Wrenn Photography for all of the amazing pictures ya’ll take. Throughout the year the Brown Family Ministries (recipients of the PBBA’s 2010 Top Hand Award) hosted great cookouts and played music. They are greatly appreciated by everyone. Thanks again to everyone who helped make the PBBA’s fourth season great and we hope to see you during our busy 2011 season.
2009 NBR Finals
Raleigh, NC February 12-13, 2010
By Kaitlyn Driscoll
It pretty much goes without saying that the finals of any bull riding association is the most highly anticipated event of the season. The National Bull Riding Association (NBR) Championship Bull Riding and Barrel Racing was held February 12th and 13th in Raleigh, NC, and was no exception. All year long, the cowboys and cowgirls competed for their spot at the finals. This Carousel Farms production, held at the JB Hunt Arena at the NC State fairgrounds, proved to be an electric two-night performance, despite the snow and wintry weather.
The top 30 bull riders in the NBR were paired up against the paramount bucking bulls in the Professional Bucking Bull Association (PBBA). It turned out to be quite a showdown, a showdown of the best battling the best for the top prizes of cash and buckles. The top 15 cowgirl barrel racers also attended the event, racing against the clock, and each other, for prestigious awards. This 2009 season finale proved rewarding for many of the cowboys and cowgirls, and more than $15,000 in cash and prizes was awarded to the winning contestants.
Friday night, Cody Martin of
In the cowgirl barrel racing, Terra Garrison led the pack with a 16.1 second run Friday night and earned herself a $509.50 paycheck. Lari Lee Isley trailed right behind with a 15.86 second run ($305.70). Jill Riebe rounded out third place with a time of 16.133 seconds ($203.80).
Only two bull riders had qualified rides in the short go round. Josh Faircloth was 89.75 points aboard Johnny Ringo from Rafter C Bucking Bulls, and Jay Miller, the only man to ride three bulls all weekend, was 83 points on Clay Ellison’s Black Magic.
Jay Miller of Liberty, SC won the average for the finals, with a combined score of 242.75 points, received $2475 in prize money, a Bob Berg Buckle, and a total of $3172.50 won for the weekend.
The PBBA Tier I first place bull was Short Notice owned by Jason Roberts, and the second place bull was Homer, owned by Mike Porter. The PBBA Tier II winning bull was High Dollar owned by Craig Wagoner. Tied for second, third, and fourth were Black Belt from Diamond C, Shot Gun Ready owned by SR Rodeo, and Rubber Bucky owned by Charlie Oldham and Caleb and Tonya White. The “money bull” of the weekend was Texas of Rafter C Bucking Bulls;
The finals also awarded many of the people who help to make events possible throughout the year, each of whom received a custom Bob Berg buckle for their hard work and dedication. Announcer of the Year was Jeff Wolfe, Secretary of the Year was Jean Radford, Scotty Williams and Kelsey Salisbury were both awarded buckles for their judging, Barrel man of the Year was Jake Wilcox, Bullfighter of the Year was Chad Ellison, Event of the Year was Camden, SC a Rafter C and Tom Smith production, and finally, Producer of the Year was Jason Roberts.
2010 shows promise to be even more successful than 2009 for the NBR. Our next event will be held March 19th and 20th in Pelzer, SC. It will be an NBR/CBR/PBBA co-sanctioned event with $5,000 added in prize money. Friday night’s performance will be a CBR event, and Saturday will be an NBR. Both nights will be PBBA performances, and there will be a short round each night! Tier 1
Tier 1 bulls are for any bull that has been to a PBBA Finals or has qualified to go to the PBBA Finals. Contractors can also choose to enter their bull in Tier 1. Once a bull has competed in Tier 1 he cannot move down to Tier 2. The entry fees for Tier 1 are $500. The payout will depend on the number of bulls entered in Tier 1. (see below) Tier 1 bulls can also be used in the short go. A random draw will be made each night to determine which Tier 1 bulls will go to the short go. The bulls for the PBBA/NBR Series Finals will be the top 40 bulls from Tier 1.
Tier 2
Tier 2 bulls are any bulls that are not required to be in Tier 1 and the contractor elected to enter their bull in Tier 2. The entry fees for Tier 2 are $300, the PBBA Fee & the Finals Fee for Tier 2 bulls are 1/2 of that of the Tier 1 bulls. The payout will depend on the number of entries. (see below) Tier 2 bulls cannot be in the short go. Once a bull has won $1,000 or more in Tier 2 PBBA competitions he must move up to Tier 1. The money won & points earned in Tier 2 do carryover to Tier 1 and count towards the bull's PBBA standings in Tier 1.
The event format:
The Tier 1 & Tier 2 bulls will be at the same event and in the same bull rider draw, except for the short go. Tier 1 bulls will compete against Tier 1 bulls and Tier 2 against Tier 2. Both Tiers will be judged by the same judges and the judges will not know the difference.
Example event:
The Producer is taking 30 bull riders and taking 8 back to the short go. There are 20 Tier 2 entries and 18 Tier 1 entries. The 20 Tier 2 bulls will be in the long round. The 18 Tier 1 bulls will draw for the 8 short round spots and the other 10 will be in the long round. Tier 1 will pay 5 holes as will Tier 2.
Payout
The payout for both levels will depend on the number of entries. Such as; 6 entries pays 2 holes, another hole will be paid for every three additional entries, up to 15 -29 entries which will pay 5 holes. 30 or more will pay 7 holes. Therefore, 9 entries pays 3 holes, 12 pays 4 and 15 pays 5.

Lyman, SC February 1, 2009----WW Bucking Bulls’, owned by Rick Wagoner and Jimmy Walton, Code Blue ended the 2008 PBBA season as a top five money winner. When the PBR’s Cody Lambert was looking for bulls for the Winston-Salem PBR he had heard that Code Blue was rank and a PBR quality bull. After consulting the PBBA website, reviewing Code Blue’s PBBA ranking, carefully looking over his PBBA scores, and talking to some PBBA members; Cody decided to give Code Blue and WW Bucking Bulls a chance at the PBR.
In the first round of the PBR Cody Campbell had his hands full with the big bull; Code Bull. After a couple of big jumps and kicks, Code Blue’s trademark, Campbell found himself in the arena dirt. The PBR judges were impressed and marked Code Blue 45.25; the third highest bull score for the night. Saturday night Cody Blue drew the PBR great, Jared Farley. Like Campbell, Farley soon had a face full of dirt. The judges were even more impressed with Code Blue’s performance, marking him 46.0 points, round two’s highest score. Code Blue ended the night as the second highest marked bull at the Winston-Salem PBR. Congratulations to Rick Wagoner and Jimmy Walton, of WW Bucking Bulls, and PBBA Board members.
